We stayed in Killarney for three nights during our June 2024 trip to Ireland, but did a lot of exploring in the surrounding area. That means the list of gluten free places we ate right in Killarney isn’t very long, but we have a few spots with gluten free options in the surrounding area to suggest as well. I have also included a map at the end of this post of everywhere I found that I considered to be good options. As usual, I did a ton of research ahead of time on where to safely eat gluten free. This included reading other bloggers’ posts, looking at Google reviews, using the FindMeGlutenFree app, and looking up menus online. I couldn’t find 100% gluten free restaurants of bakeries in Killarney (I think I found one in all of Ireland). As always, make sure to do your own research, ask questions ahead of ordering, and reach out to restaurants ahead of time regarding options and protocols if you need to.

Stonechat
This pub is hidden down an alley, so you won’t stumble upon it, you must look for it. They have what can be modified to be gluten free marked on the menu. Often, it is just a matter of swapping for gluten free bread – most of their menu is naturally gluten free outside of the bread. We had seafood chowder, Irish lamb stew, and sticky toffee pudding. All were fantastic! This was by far our best meal in Ireland. HIGHLY recommend.
Lana Thai
This is an Irish chain with what is gluten free and what can be made gluten free marked on the menu. We tried it in multiple cities during our trip. This time, we had the chicken Massaman curry special with steamed rice. The specials are a very affordable dinner option. The portions are very large, and the food is surprisingly good for the price and it being a chain.
Caragh Restaurant
They have allergens listed on the menu and items that can be made gluten free are marked. The reviews for this place are very positive, especially on FindMeGlutenFree. Our advice is to double and triple check that your food is gluten free. The only reason I’m keeping Caragh on our Killarney restaurant list is because our experience seems to be outside the norm for this restaurant based on other reviews.
We each had Irish beef stew, which comes with mashed potatoes and fries (chips). We had the toffee roulade for dessert. The stew was fine, but it’s a lot of potatoes as there are some in the stew as well (so that’s three types of potatoes). The dessert was very sweet. Portions were large. The downfall for us was that the service was AWFUL. Our server was super curt with us, and all but threw the stew on the table. Yet, she was friendly with other tables around us. Maybe she thought we were American? Her tune changed when we ordered the dessert. I think she gave us regular (not gluten free) stew and realized it when I triple checked the dessert was gluten free, as this is when her demeanor changed. I felt sick afterwards, and am certain I was gluten-ed. Personally, I wouldn’t dare go back, but again this seems to be an abnormal experience for this restaurant.
Gluten Free Outside Killarney City
The Buttery (Limerick)
This is a brunch stop that seems super popular. They have a separate gluten free menu. The menus are different for midweek versus weekend. I had eggs Benedict with smashed avocado, and Ahmed had a four-egg omelet with chicken and cheddar cheese. We also had coffee. The food was really good! The portions were very large – we didn’t finish everything.
The Cafe Portmagee (Portree)
The Café is in a small village called Portmagee, which is on the Skellig Ring, off the Ring of Kerry. They had allergens marked on they menu along with some items specifically marked gluten free. We had chips (ie fries) and a gluten free raspberry cheesecake, plus coffees. The cheesecake was delicious – not too sweet. The coffee was good.
Maison Gourmet (Kenmare)
You’ll find Maison Gourmet is the town of Kenmare, which is along the Ring of Kerry. They have a gluten free cake most days (they had carrot cake when we went). The items on the menu that can be modified to be gluten free are marked with a yellow circle. We shared avocado toast, and each had coffee. The avocado was fantastic, as were the “cuby fries” that came with the toast. A good stop if you’re in the area.
